Disabled and Proud: Four Leaders Share Their Experiences
Disability is part of us and it is not something we can avoid.
I had my injury about 10 years ago and now use a wheelchair. I didn’t realize I had preconceived ideas about disability until I was lying in a hospital bed with a disability myself.
I went from someone who felt like the world was at their feet, like they could go and do anything, to suddenly being so restricted in my thoughts and what I thought I was capable of. I think that’s because it was something that subconsciously fed me in my life up to that point.
I was incredibly lucky to have a phenomenal support structure around me and people who said, ‘That’s not the case. You can still go out and do all these amazing things with your life.
There are things I can’t do, but I can always try to find a way, within reason. I’m not going to climb Mount Everest, for example, but I can still enjoy life and challenge myself.
Because disability is a part of us, we should celebrate that difference. Due to the negative narrative about disability, people have preconceived ideas about what it means. Instead, we need to start celebrating some of the amazing attributes that people with disabilities have.
People with disabilities have to live and try to be successful in a world that is not ready for them. This means that we have to be incredibly resourceful and adaptable, to think outside the box and constantly solve problems. People who don’t necessarily understand or have that lived experience don’t always realize that these additional challenges exist.
Disability means so many different things to so many different people, even people with the same disability can have an incredibly different experience. Goal Disability Pride is an opportunity for all of us to come together, connect, try to change that narrative and those preconceived ideas, and open up opportunities for others.
Let’s make the world a better place for the next wave of people to come. We are not only doing it for people with disabilities, it is going to improve society as a whole.

What are business leaders expecting from the next British Prime Minister?
The remaining Tory leadership candidates will face off in another vote later today as the party seeks to find a replacement for Boris Johnson at 10 Downing Street.
Rishi Sunak is the current favorite among his fellow Tory MPs with 118 votes, and his Treasury experience can be seen as an asset among business leaders who put inflation and the economy among their top concerns.
According to a survey by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), 89% of small businesses say that operating costs have increased this year compared to last year, with the rising cost of fuel and utilities contributing the most to this increase.
FSB national chairman Martin McTague says his members are looking for a candidate for prime minister “unequivocally pro-business, pro-growth” as he warns that “growth cannot be put on hold for two months”.
He adds: “Businesses desperately need help with the charges that hit them no matter how profitable they are: business rates, national insurance, utilities, fuel and those related to supply chain disruption.”
Sunak takes on Penny Mordaunt and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, who currently have the support of 92 and 86 MPs respectively.
tackling corporate tax
A potential policy mentioned by the candidates to reduce the pressures on businesses is the cancellation of the proposed increase in corporation tax. This was to drop from 19% to 25% from April 1 of next year.
Liz Truss and Penny Mordaunt have both promised deep tax cuts in a bid to win over Conservative Party members, while Sunak insisted he would wait before cutting taxes further.
The Institute for Fiscal Studies estimates that reversing the planned corporate tax hike for large companies would cost £17billion a year.
But Make UK head Stephen Phipson says many businesses would see no immediate return as a result. Commenting on FinancialTimes, he says: “A lot of companies would see no benefit in lowering corporate tax because they don’t make money.” Instead, the Confederation of British Industry says it would like the focus to be on the investment-targeted business tax.
In an open letter to Tory leadership candidates, its chief executive, Tony Danker, wrote: “Investment-focused business tax measures avoid significant inflation risk as they seek to materialize in the economic activity over the next year and beyond, rather than right now. of inflation.
He suggests that reforming business rates and developing a successor to the super deduction, which allows businesses to recoup tax on investment, should be a priority. Any changes to the overall corporate tax rate should be considered alongside all taxes that apply to businesses, including corporate rates and national insurance.
The Institute of Directors (IoD), which represents 25,000 business owners and board members, says any reduction in corporate taxation would be welcome. But he suggested any corporate tax cuts could be linked to the government’s net zero target to incentivize more sustainable actions.
Conservative Leadership Hope’s Climate Commitments
The goal of net zero has been another key point of debate in the Conservative Party leadership race.
In the week the Met Office issued its first red extreme heat warning, candidates were asked during the ITV leadership debate whether they would stick to the current 2050 net zero target .
All candidates except Kemi Badenoch (who is now out of the running) have committed to the existing target. Several responses, however, came with caveats.
Sunak warned that ‘if we go too hard and too fast we will lose people’, while Truss said any action on climate change should not harm people and businesses and promised a moratorium on the green tax .
Responding to speculation that a new prime minister may seek to change the UK government’s net zero commitments, IoD senior policy adviser Alex Hall-Chen said: ‘Deviating from existing UK commitments United on emissions and undermining its global leadership on this issue would be destabilizing. for UK businesses.
Conservative minister and COP26 president Alok Sharma has also threatened to quit if a future prime minister waters down the government’s key climate commitments.
“Business leaders would have watched from behind their hands”
After the final ballot of MPs later today, the final two candidates will be on Friday for the votes of around 150,000 Conservative Party members over the summer.
Clearly, business wants the next prime minister to focus on growth and on the country’s current economic challenges.
But British Chamber of Commerce President Ruby McGregor-Smith is not convinced the remaining candidates are up to the task.
In an editorial of Telegraph, she said: “We are now in the grip of a lame government that cannot make the big decisions that our economy needs.” Adding that, “business leaders across the UK would have been watching from the back of their hands.”
McGregor-Smith said the current uncertainty will “further hurt business confidence” and called for “strong fiscal policy and a long-term strategy to get us back to economic growth.”
An FSB survey found business owner confidence fell to -24.7, down more than 40 points from the same quarter last year and below the level seen when the omicron Covid variant hit. started to spread at the end of last year.
Whoever takes over as Prime Minister will likely have his work cut out to restore confidence in the business community.

Business leaders, take inspiration from Churchill!
There are men like Nelson Mandela or Gandhi and women like Wangari Maathai or Rosa Parks who are inspired by their ideas, their perseverance and their courage. They left models that we are tempted to follow for our happiness and that of those around us. Recognized for his effective talent in negotiation, Churchill, called “the old lion” is one of the favorite references of entrepreneurs and the daring. This is what drives some of them to take his example and adopt his methods.
Mastery of data
Even if Churchill was often not sure of himself, he always armed himself with attested and well-prepared data. Despite everything, he is able to create a meeting with his collaborators at any time of the day and night. This data was then used to persuade the other leaders of the coalition. This method focuses on the fact that it is better to convince than to persuade. Prioritize your factual data before putting forward your own opinions and intuitions. Whether through graphic figures, or others, everything is good to put your project in the big plan to your collaborators, customers or partners.
be empathetic
This former British Prime Minister, I played for a long time as egocentric, to tactfully convince his interlocutors. Instead of imposing his logic, he adapts to that of his interlocutors. While negotiating with the President of the USSR Stalin, he had a metaphorical speech over a few glasses of alcohol and cigarettes. Obviously, do not go drinking throughout your meetings. try to understand and identify your interlocutor and convince him according to his reasoning. Don’t force them to accept your strategies. On the contrary, ask them for their opinion and together see all the important points in the discussion.
Don’t beat around the bush
Churchill is also famous for his intelligence in organizing meetings. During a meeting, he goes straight to the heart of the matter and exposes his interlocutors to concrete facts to encourage them to better understand the situation. By confronting them directly with the reality of your projects, you all solicit the attention of your interlocutors. Build their confidence by outlining the risks and benefits of your idea. Anyway, don’t overdo it at the risk of ruining everything.
Be flexible with strategies
Churchill is not content with his only bow, he always had a plan B even if he already had an action plan to keep his political position. When he discovers the evolution of enemy camps, he can quickly adapt his strategy. Take the example of this former British Prime Minister by offering you the possibility of having your strategy evaluated if necessary. Because your ideas are accepted, your speeches vary according to the attention and requirements of your interlocutors. In the case of perpetual change, we do not need to learn the necessary measurements.
There are many lessons to be learned from the decisions made by Churchill. Be logical and don’t oversell. Think carefully before making a decision in the event of a change in strategy. And above all, avoid doubting it.

Who are the best leaders?
Running a business is not easy. The entrepreneur is capable of managing, organizing, anticipating everything, it is the health and sustainability of his business that depends on it.
“The optimist is the faith that leads to success. Nothing can be achieved without hope and trust. »
Helen Keller
The entrepreneur is therefore the true master on board his company. He and only he is capable of giving the desired directions for the future. The question then arises as to what entrepreneurial profile is the most apt to lead a company down the path of success: the optimist who expects a lot from the future and gives it full confidence? Or the pessimist, fearful of the future and wanting to consolidate the foundations of their business as much as possible to face a turbulent future?
“If you have confidence in yourself, you will inspire confidence in others. »
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
First profile: the optimistic entrepreneur
At first glance, the optimistic entrepreneur is one who looks forward to the future with joy. Aware of the current health of his business, be it good or bad, he sees many opportunities for the future:
– Is the company in great difficulty today? Nothing to worry about! The future is full of good surprises that will finally give the company the boost it deserves to relaunch it financially on the path to success.
“Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass, it is about learning to dance in the rain. »
Seneca
– is the full economic boom of the company today. The future will necessarily perpetuate this situation, consolidate it and allow the company to maintain this perfect financial health, or even improve it.
“Action is the fundamental key to all success. »
Pablo Picasso
The optimist necessarily sees something positive in the future. Not that he ignores all the current factors affecting his business, but the optimistic business leader is not fearful, on the contrary. He thinks that today is just a step towards a brighter tomorrow. For this reason, he does not hesitate to do everything possible so that his company is in the best conditions to open up to a happy future. Despite everything, the optimistic entrepreneur does not forget the present.
Second profile: the pessimistic entrepreneur
Another type of entrepreneur, much less serene before the arrival of the future: the pessimistic entrepreneur.
“Winners find ways, losers make excuses. »
Roosevelt
Truly fearful of the dark days that await his company, the pessimist, however, does not hesitate to do everything possible to make the present of his company the best it can be. This will certainly not last, so there is an obligation to do everything possible so that the financial health of the company is impeccable and the consolidation of its activity. The approaching future may be made up of crises, difficult times, or many other dark situations. So let’s use the present to prepare in the best way, or rather the least bad way, for the future.
“When you can’t go back, you just have to worry about the best way forward. »
Paulo Coelho
The pessimistic business leader does not see everything with dark eyes. He simply knows that the health of his company is only fleeting and that the future can obviously cloud this good situation. So he does not bet on that future in any way and does everything possible to act at the moment he thinks he can act: the present.
“A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity, an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”
Winston Churchill
Optimistic or pessimistic…?
Finally, both of these profiles of entrepreneurs have unpleasant flaws and yet interesting qualities. Are you afraid of the future of your company and want to do everything possible today to seriously and rigorously consolidate the economic activity of your company? Don’t panic, this form of pessimism can only benefit you. The future is bound to bring good news and do you have full faith in the future? So do not hesitate to maintain your profile as an optimistic entrepreneur and continue to manage the present of your company as well as possible in order to welcome this brilliant future that is promised to you with open arms.
“The optimist and the pessimist are equally necessary for society, the optimist invents the airplane, the pessimist invents the parachute. »

3 tips for meeting leaders
A successful meeting is not necessarily as easy as you think. It is not uncommon to quickly fall into meetingitis or that a meeting does not meet with the proposed success. If you want to increase your chances, follow these tips.
Establish meeting objectives
Have you ever attended a meeting and didn’t know why? A meeting is prepared to address respect for those present, but it also feels like a meeting for business. A meeting objective must be clear: do I have a message to convey? Should I distribute information? Do I need to implement solutions? Do you have a deep thought? The animator will have to adapt his style of animation to his type(s) of objective(s).
Submit documentation upstream
How much time wasted in a meeting where participants received documents they didn’t have time to read. Sending the documentation upstream is not only a good practice to save time but also to have more relevance in your exchanges with the participants. This may seem obvious but leaving time for reflection often implies better interventions and responses, especially since certain data must sometimes be imposed on an amount by the participants so that the meeting is not just an opportunity to have a meeting.
Listen to the participants
Active listening is probably the most difficult attitude for a facilitator to acquire. It is a neutral, attentive and respectful listening to the participants. The leader must show his attention and his interest by taking into account the verbal and non-verbal language. This listening requires a strong dose of concentration and a strong desire to understand. The facilitator questions and reformulates to validate his understanding. Active listening is the basis of a meaningful encounter.
Energize your meeting
If you are lazy and don’t have enough energy, then you can attend because the meeting is different. Your energy communicates and this from the first minutes. Feel free to launch dynamically. If you occasionally have attendees who tend to huddle in their corner, and don’t intervene and are in a position of attention, try the stand-up meeting. In this position, they will tend to want to shorten it as much as possible and quickly convey their opinion rather than staying in their corner and intervening at the end.
sound the conclusion
The conclusion of the meeting should not be overlooked. The facilitator must take time to define the successive stages but also to distribute the crosses and the “action”. A good animation must bear meaning for the participants: by distributing, everyone knows why they came. Once the meeting is over, it’s not over… You’ll probably get a report to make sure future items require you to get well and they don’t. Reporting also serves to avoid any dispute over what has been said and the commitments made by each. If you can, you will find that the structure is clear and if possible you can use it for the following ones.

Leaders, how well does the succession take over?
Can you confirm that there is an establishment in France that is sorely lacking in skilled labor in certain trades, particularly in crafts and catering or certain technical sectors, but don’t we have a share of each of responsibility? The answer is yes: faced with our children and with the desire to do well, we either have a fairly elitist vision of the professions towards which they must direct themselves, or we do not ask enough time for dialogue with them without prejudice. and conventions.
A profession imposed from adolescence?
It is clear that the current education system has no chance of answering this reliable question. I wasted a step of only a week to find out the company, the current system forces the teenager to decide for three years on the line he would choose. The tendency being to communicate in an elitist way on the sectors, it amounts to sending the less good in bac pro which however form to real trades and the best in generalist sectors while sometimes advising them against the first, without taking into account the appetites from each other.
Stages of third to promote
Business leaders have their share of responsibility in raising awareness: they must make people love their job and communicate to prepare for the next generation. Very often, parents themselves, they should be much more open to welcoming young people into their own company and taking initiatives in this direction. Some companies understand the interest of the survey on the age of teenagers in 9th grade for their one-week internship. During this internship, they are sensitized to the profession that can insert them into very advanced object reflection. Most of the college students often seoul interest in pulling their stage report to get a great grade. Some do not hesitate to send to the Company which has sometimes welcomed them and even apply for a summer job.
Getting known to young audiences
In order to make your profession better known, companies can participate more in local initiatives such as open days in the company or forums in colleges and high schools, also knowing that parents are very little informed of these events. You can find out about the initiatives by contacting the educational establishments and the town hall where your company is present to propose your candidacy and/or you are on the initiative of a Forum or trips to be opened. You can also contribute to the notoriety of your profession.
Some Necessary Sensitivities for Teens
Ideally, adolescents should be given time to ask themselves the right questions by allowing them to meet other adults to talk to them. Their presenter of job descriptions is essential in detail in order to make them aware of other more technical jobs. Thanks to self-definition, at the cost of awareness of the issues and understanding the workings of self-esteem by managing to know how to make choices on the educational, professional and personal levels.
It’s up to you to see how much you want to promote the professions within your company.
