What is Google Ads Privacy Sandbox?

Privacy Sandbox is a group of technological standards promoted by Google that purport to provide a greater protection of user privacy, without advertisers having to give up doing personalized advertising.

Privacy Sandbox is an open source and collaborative initiative launched by Chrome in 2019. Google has invited other members of the internet community, such as web browsers, online advertising publishers, ad tech companies, advertisers and developers to get involved and contribute to the project development. This is an ongoing initiative, posting frequent updates on its progress on the Chromium blog.

By early 2021, the project had already received more than 30 proposals, consisting of new technologies that replace systems such as third-party cookies with more secure and privacy-friendly solutions. These include proposals to restrict user tracking while browsing the web, to fight spam and online fraud with identity authentication that protects privacy, to display relevant content and advertisements to individuals without putting their data at risk. and to measure online advertising in an anonymized manner.

The three main goals of the Privacy Sandbox

  1. Avoid tracking users while browsing the internet. According to Google, people should be able to surf the internet without worrying that their personal data is being collected by online sites. The Privacy Sandbox initiative has set out to eliminate frequently used tracking mechanisms such as third-party cookies and fingerprinting (information collected about a user’s software and hardware in order to identify them).
  2. Allow publishers to create sustainable sites that respect privacy. Web developers and businesses should be able to make money from their websites and communicate with their customers without using intrusive tracking techniques over the internet. With the Privacy Sandbox, Google Ads has set out to develop innovative and privacy-focused alternatives for the main online needs of businesses, including serving relevant ads to their customers.
  3. Keeping the web alive. The open web is a valuable source of information with a unique ability both to share content with billions of people and to tailor this content to their individual needs. The Privacy Sandbox proposals are designed to protect the safety of Internet users and maintain freedom of access to information for all, so that the Internet can continue to support economic growth now and in the future.
