Google Analytics Link Click Tracking (How to Set Up With Tag Manager)

Google Analytics does not track link clicks by default. For link click tracking we need to bring in the help of Google Tag Manager (GTM) and pair it up with Google Analytics (UA).

This is a video overview of the process of using Google Tag Manager to:

– Create our user defined variable for our Google Analytics property (this ties our GTM container code to our GA property)

– Configure our Built in variables, including the {{Click URL}} variable that we’ll need to use in our link click tracking event parameters

– Create our link click trigger that will fire on all pages on all link clicks

– Create our link click tag and understand the event parameters like Category, Action, and Label

– How to see and understand our event data (including those event parameters listed immediately above) in Google Analytics

Please note, this video is for the Universal Analytics (UA) property type of Google Analytics.

The new GA4 has a different process. For more on GA4 vs. UA, you can check out this comparison: https://www.rootandbranchgroup.com/google-analytics-4-vs-universal-analytics/
