

The Mexican small and medium-sized businesses will be able to increase their sales through national and international e-commerce thanks to an agreement signed between Amazon, one of the most important marketplaces in the world, and the Ministry of the Economy (SE).
Within the framework of the Summit of the Americas, the Secretary of the Economy, Tatiana Clouthier, signed a collaboration agreement which establishes the bases to promote concerted promotion, dissemination, marketing and internationalization of the products of Mexican micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).
The agreement between Amazon and the Ministry of Economy aims to boost the country’s exports
The agreement has two main objectives: boost MSME exports so that these increase their marketing channels, bringing their products to the American market through the global Amazon program.
The second objective is integrate craft businesses into the Amazon Handmade category, which currently has more than 3,000 artisans and a selection of more than 160,000 handicrafts.
The collaboration between the Ministry of the Economy and Amazon will include a training strategy and constant comprehensive support in the process of digitization for mexican companies.
Half of online consumers prefer marketplaces
According to a survey by Up Sí Vale, digital buyers are regular users of marketplaces, since 6 out of 10 people usually make their purchases online on sites like Amazon, which have become the favorite pages of Mexican SMEs.
Regarding what they look for or buy online in market places or official stores, they point out that 32% of those questioned confirm that they usually buy food or food at home, 31% clothes and accessories, 12% buy at the supermarket; 13% appliances and 11% household items.
Gerardo Yepez, director of Up Yes Vale, online sales transactions increased by more than 300% from 2020; of them more than 60% were made via marketplaces, with which one can get an idea of the importance for SMEs to have the support of a marketplace to reach their target audience.
The Ministry of Economy bets on the digitization of MSME trade
The digital transformation has become a priority for businesses around the world and Mexico has promoted action on this issue ever since, according to the Network Readiness Index, The country has one of the most digitized economies.
Of the 134 countries assessed in the world, Mexico occupies position 63 thanks to the progress it has made in terms of digitization, which includes a 15 point increase in the percentage of Internet users.
In this sense, the agreement between Amazon and the Ministry of Economy will support MiPyMEs who want to learn to sell through e-commerce at a national level, but will also follow companies to export via online sales platforms with global reach.
Secretary Clouthier pointed out that The best way to promote job creation and boost competitiveness in Mexico is through strengthening MSMEs and their insertion in foreign trade, because they represent 90% of companies and more than 70% of jobs in the world.
Sarah Jane Gunter, Vice President of Latin America Consumer Affairs for Amazon, noted that “At Amazon, we are focused on growing MSMEs. We are proud to continue to strengthen the relationships that allow us to contribute to the growth of companies by offering training and support on digitalization and export issues.”.
